Health and Safety BenchmarkIf the senior management in an organisation does not believe health and safety data, why should they take an action?

For those trying to advise senior management on health and safety this can be a significant obstacle to compliance and improvement.

Benchmarking is often used to help organisations understand how well they are performing compared to other similar organisations. Once a business understands its relative performance, it may be motivated to learn from those who are performing better.

Accident statistics are the most common data used for measuring health and safety performance and this is used as the key benchmark in the Health and Safety Executive’s annual report.

However, the vast majority of H&S data and statistics are only viewed by H&S professionals. Only they are interested in it and, to most managers, it is far from exciting. This is the problem with much health and safety information, it is only seen by those who are already aware.
But does it have to be this way?

Arinite Research

Arinite health and safety consultants are carrying out pioneering research to break these boundaries by making health and safety information interesting.
Part of this research is examining health and safety benchmarking and what information managers would like to see. If I owned a business, I would be interested to know how I compared to other similar businesses. So what could be measured?

  • Injury and ill health rates per industry sector.
  • Incident rates including business damage due to fire and other physical damage.
  • Injury and ill health rates per industry sector.
  • Incident rates including business damage due to fire and other physical damage.
  • The actual and hidden cost of accidents.
  • Lost working days due to injuries at work.
  • The number of prosecutions.
  • Total annual H&S fines and levels of H&S prosecution fines for different sectors.
  • Company H&S awards and rates of awards for different sectors.
  • The number of routine inspections carried out by HSE/LA. Rates per industry sector.
  • Fee for intervention, annual total and rates per industry sector

And this could be supported by background inter-related data such as:

  • Total UK working population, total number of DSE users, total number of professionals, total number of industrial workers etc.
  • Total number of UK companies and broken down into number of people employed.
  • Profitability.
  • Morale.
